I agree with your thoughts on this Chris. I experienced the same thing you describe in my racecar engine. I didn't know it had the old style arms (narrow, w/out bushing) and the binding of the arm on the post caused the chain tension to go haywire and resulted in collateral damage to the sprockets on the intermediate shaft.
