The lump I had in my neck years ago did not hurt, and appeared over a period of about a week. Mine was an effected lymph node from stage III Hodgkins desease, which was part of a much larger undetected mass in my chest.
Don't delay having tests done, most likely it is nothing serious, but don't take that gamble.
