I just clean fretboards with whatever. Water. Perhaps a little soap. Yes, you can use 0000 steel wool, which will remove fret corrosion. Then I finish with lemon oil. You can also used boiled linseed oil. Make sure it is the boiled kind.
I do this about annually. Many of my guitars live outside their cases. Guitars are for playing.
