In the case of many of the pyramids: by building your interior, then roofing over it, no lighting required unless working at night.
A lot of them also do have soot from visitors/looters.
Its the tunnel networks that were kept hidden until modern times that are perhaps a little more of a mystery. Although oil burning lamps could be it.
I was hoping to just have a little fun instead of being serious.

My dad is one of those that thinks they had arc lamps.
I do find it interesting just what things have been invented that were lost/forgotten in war/famine/migration.
The German's had movable negative air foils for competition cars that never got to production because of WWII, those ideas were lost as the engineers died, were imprisoned, or pressed into service for other countries by the end of the war. It took decades for that to get re-invented once again, and only now do we understand what some 1938/1939 drawings actually were of.
