This. Most of the local news people in my area usually end up working in the
PR department of one of the larger companies. That generally amounts to a massive pay increase and a massive reduction in stress.
My first cousin is an on-air person for local news. She's worked in Macon, GA; St. Louis, MO; and Milwaukee, WI. I know her parents supported her financially right up until she got married as her pay (less than what a full-time waitress can make) didn't support her lifestyle. (They basically subsidized her career for the first ten years.) My take on the local news market is that it is similar to the regional pilot market: you have a ton of people working for ridiculously low wages because it may earn them a shot at the "big time". My understanding is that only the people who do local news in LA, Chicago, and New York make a decent living, and of course there are the national news programs whose anchors get pay 8 figures.
