Defining "rebuild"
My first Porsche rebuild was for a friend of his 2.2 in a 914-6 original. There is a book with Porsche engine specs which sets upper wear limits or an acceptable "range" of part fitments. New piston rings had an end gap in his cylinders that was at the very upper limit. I don't recall what gap the rings that came out of it had. This engine got bearings, rings, those danged studs, and seals replaced, but the pistons and cylinders were worn to the very upper limit. He was too cheap to pay the $1200 they wanted so the engine went back together as he wanted it. Of course it didn't run very smoothly. It did seem to run well, but we had no other example to compare it to. I was not experience with Porsche air cooled then. He was directing what he thought it needed or what he wanted to spend money on. We tried balancing the Webers and improved the running a little. However when I suggested a compression check, the results were 90,120, 100,130, 110,90 psi. I think the numbers were supposed to be about 150. So you can see why the engine wasn't smooth and for certain wasn't putting out the 155 hp it was rated at. He was just using it as a daily driver and cruising, so it wasn't tooo bad, just a super poor monetary decision in my opinion.
