I think you aren't really that objective, in the 80ies there were loads of cars that stood out.. Like the Lambo Countach in Cannonball run, a lot of kids grew up with Lambo posters on the wall.

And when I drive around in my 987, with the Carnewall exhaust... I may be driving slow in town, not making much noise..
But I see those 10 year old boys turn their head when i drive by..and smile when I blip the throttle. So the cars still impress.

A Porsche though more are made each year then 40 years ago, still stands out from the pack because the pack is much bigger now then it was 40 years ago.. Market share wise Porsche did not grow that much if at all they did.

I'de say movies in the 80ies were more car focussed, movies these day are crap and CGI focussed. Big explosions. And the new cars don't get as much attention in such movies.
And when they do focus on cars, they get the old ones out for nostalgic reasons..

So it's a new era, with different movies.. not for the better.
I don't think the cars can be blamed for that.
