I would force myself to stay awake until the first local natural "bedtime" that was at least one normal waking period away. In other words, if I arrived in the mid afternoon, I would stay awake through that night and the next day, then crash that evening. If I arrived in the early morning, I would hit the sack at a normal bedtime that evening. I always found it easier to stay awake, even for 36 hours or so, to get synchronized with local time. The cat naps never worked for me, although they work for lots of folks. I cannot sleep on an airplane under any circumstances - I know too many guys that work on them...
