In talking to the police, border patrol, FBI and other law enforcement types they pretty much all say a 12 or 20 gauge shot gun with double ought buckshot is what they have at home for their spouse when they are at work. The shot gun is an semi auto unless their wife or girl friend has practiced quite a lot with a pump. The first shot is okay but then the total panic probably sets in and a slide is hard for them. For a guy well it doesn't matter unless they have shot back at some one as punching holes in paper doesn't count much. The gun noise, smoke, screaming of the bad guy if you hit them is a tad hard to get used to.
If you need a pistol then a revolver is probably better choice as if there is a mis fire then just pull the trigger again. S&W is making their Custom Shop TRR8 and model 66 in 8 shot models and 357 loads are good especially if the bad guy has lots of jackets/sweats on as they can act almost like body armor.
