So taking that option out of the equation, how exactly is a standard (or HD-specific) .223/5.56 round a "beyond irresponsible" choice, as compared to other HD choices (9mm, .45, 12ga, etc.)?
I can think of a few reasons for it not being a practical choice, but am not seeing how it would be an irresponsible one.

'barrier blind' is silly. Take a .223 rifle to the range and shoot whatever cheap ammo you feel like at some wood, metal, drywall, pork ribs, whatever you want. That little 55 grain projectile will be like 'did I just feel a tug?' as it passes through whatever household items you might want to put in front of it.
