Rick, you have the luxury, and attendant security, of living in a rural American utopia. Many people do not.

A good example of someone who does not might be a woman that works at the company from which my wife recently retired. An Indian immigrant (legally), her husband owns a budding cab company and she works as a medical assistant. Between their two incomes, they can barely afford to live in the Puget Sound area, in reasonable commuting range from their work.

They are a working couple, necessarily gone during mid day. Their rental home has been broken into at least five or six times at last count. Thank God neither have been home when this has happened, at least not yet. They are hard working, honest people, saving diligently towards the day they can move out of that neighborhood. That day is at least a couple of years down the road.

What would you suggest in the interim?
