Ah yes - I grew up reading Col. Cooper. My other huge influence in all things big bore was Elmer Keith. Between the two of them, I grew up believing the .45 ACP was for ground hogs and the .375 H&H was a fine caliber for white tails.
Gotta say, after my own experiences in the field, I can't say they were wrong.
