If you're willing to use a pump, I'd go with a 12 gauge. I know more than a few LE guys who stock their at-home sweepers with 00 buck, but I prefer #4 -- 27 pellets of ~.25 caliber rather than 15 pellets of ~.32 caliber. Never used in a self-defense situation but gives me a little extra confidence.
You can get reduced-recoil buckshot loads but I've never tried them in an auto and wouldn't know if they'd cycle properly/reliably.
