Tried it. Does not work as advertised. It behaves just like the online tracking.
I suspect the disparity in service perceptions and the resulting level of affinity/distaste for the USPS is related to the size of your city. Smaller, more rural towns are likely staffed by folks who live in the neighborhoods they deliver to. Those carriers and counter workers feel a loyalty to their neighbors and it shows in their service.
Larger cities are staffed by employees who staff "remote" post offices and deliver to "distant" neighborhoods where they have little to no connection. As a result, service suffers.
This does not explain the horrible tracking provided by USPS. But I am sure it can be fixed with another postal rate hike.
