I remember Daily Telegraph buyer's guide for a 930 from 90s, it said many people accumulated miles on another speedometer, original being tucked safely away.

There were two reasons for it: insurance payment was subject to annual mileage - huge discounts available for classic policies, eg. 3000 miles/annum. Another was depreciation of particularly low mile -examples, if one drove on another speedo, car value would not go down.
