There were two reasons for it: insurance payment was subject to annual mileage - huge discounts available for classic policies, eg. 3000 miles/annum. Another was depreciation of particularly low mile -examples, if one drove on another speedo, car value would not go down.

This is very true. I knew a lot of guys who did this - not with Porsches, but with Ferraris. It made economic sense in the Ferrari world for sure.
