Its certainly not easy but if your able to bond that bung back in its proper place your not really relying on the JB weld or whatever you use for a seal as the tank strainer will still be the seal with Oring and tank. There are notches in the bung and the tank where they melted/heated it in place.

I made the mistake of changing the strainer on my wifes car and the stupid little bung spun and for what....the strainer was perfectly clean after 24 years. I could have cried at that moment when it spun. I used the old strainer to help located the bung with JB weld and let dry for 48 hours. Put new strainer in and no problems ever since as the gas is sealed with the strainer at the tank and the JB weld is not sealing gasoline, just helping retain the bung.

Not going to lie, I worry every time I fill it up. If I had plenty of time I would change the tank and not worry any more. I would NEVER change another strainer for fear of this magnitude of a problem.
