Hi there superman! I am also doing exactly what you are proposing (and doing!), and that is fitting a later oval dash into a 924S. So, I am looking at your progress with interest. I did find this though, it might not be applicable as my car is a UK spec RHD. The later steering column has the fixing bracket in exactly the same place, but in the later dash cars the column was slightly offset.
Check this by fitting the dash and seeing exactly where the column sits with respect to the dash. If it is over slightly, then LHD cars have the same issue. If you don't do something about it, the column switch will not sit properly in the aperture, and the assorted plastic trims will not fit. I have gotten around the issue by creating slots in the column bracket to get the dimensions right. I now intend to weld a reinforcing plate into place to provide the necessary mechanical strength. Hope this info helps...keep up the good work!
