I think if there was a wear issue, he would have pulled the op over and said something like "hey look- your previous set was worn on the inside to the cord/ etc...."
But he didn't, he stated that even though the tires are the same size, things 'could' still be off.
I would check the wear myself, and assuming there is no abnormal wear issue, call them out on it, and find another place.
