I think that there are several that work just fine. I have heard of kits that work with a laptop that will run the diagnostic procedures like the dealer machine will, but I have never seen one personally.
The most popular reader among BMW enthusiasts is the PEAKE. It is light, compact, and very easy to use. It is sold pretty much anywhere that sells BMW parts, or from the PEAKE website. There is one for engine control codes and one for SRS (airbag system) codes. e36 owners need both. e46s don't have so many problems with the SRS system, so they generally just need the engine code reader to reset the oil change and inspection lights and read codes. I have two e36s and two e46s, and the only time I have ever needed the SRS tool for an e46 was to reset the light after I stupidly turned on the ignition while an airbag was unplugged because I was fixing a window regulator. |
