Thinking of e46

I am looking for an e46 auto but am scared of the no reverse issue. Were X awd vehicles prone to this too? Any insights?

I would not be that concerned. I have forgotten the details, but that problem affected only the first few years of the e46, and those cars have most likely already failed and been fixed. My wife's '04 330i has 100k miles of hard driving (both she and the lady who owned it before her have heavy right feet) and that auto tranny has never been touched except for a one fluid change, and still works flawlessly.

Read up on it, and if you are looking at a model year that was affected by this problem, insist on documentation that it has been corrected, or keep looking.
