2002 325 with P0340
Hi,
I have a 2002 325I with 180k Just installed rebuilt vanos and new intake as well as exhaust cam positon sensors, still have P0340 code. Car starts kind of hard and has no power until 3500 rpm's then I get the p0340 again, even after clearing code. I do get the signal back to the ECU from the intake and exhaust cam position sensor, this was tested by probing the feed back wire at the ECU connector with the key on and rotating the engine by hand, I checked the crank position sensor this way too. I am considering checking the cam timing next, I have checked and I am getting voltage to the Vanos solenoids. I guess my question is if the cam timing feed back is way out will the ECU not turn on the Vanos unit. The car has symptoms of the cam timing being to far retard, power comes on to late in power band. Thanks kevin |

SOLVED
Timing tools arrived and found the helical gear on the intake cam was in a bind not allowing the vanos to move the helical gear therefore not changing cam timing at all on the intake cam. Loosened both sprockets then went thru the cam timing procedure for a double vanos. When this was complete I could use a 24mm wrench on each of the cams with the vanos removed and rotate each of the cams and the helical gear would travel in and out. put the car back together and it runs fine. Thanks for all of the views Kevin |
