"I wish someone could talk Porsche into moving beyond the 911 design."....

Uh, they've done that...914, 928, 924, 944, Cayenne, Cayman, etc. The 928 was an expensive lesson to Porsche...

Paul, you don't move beyond a design by selling the old car alongside the new one. The "expensive" lesson was to stand behind the new design, instead of hamstringing it. Ernst Fuhrmann (sp?) got screwed on that deal because the Porsche family wanted the 911 kept on since a family member designed it. If Porsche had done the same crap to the 911 at its launch and kept the 356 going, it wouldn't have survived either.

I dig! I'm in step.
When it was hip to be hep, I was hep.
I don't blow but I'm a fan.
Look at me swing. Ring a ding ding.
I even call my girlfriend "man," I'm so hip.

Here's the entire song...

See, I'm hip. I'm no square.
I'm alert, I'm awake, I'm aware.
I am always on the scene.
Makin' the rounds, diggin' the sounds.
I read People Magazine.
'Cuz I'm hip.

Like, dig! I'm in step.
When it was hip to be hep, I was hep.
I don't blow but I'm a fan.
Look at me swing. Ring a ding ding.
I even call my girlfriend "man,"
'cuz I'm hip.

Every Saturday night
with my suit buttoned tight and my suedes on
I'm gettin' my kicks
diggin' arty French flicks with my shades on.

I'm too much. I'm a gas.
I am anything but middle class.
When I hang around the band,
poppin' my thumbs, diggin' the drums,
sqaures don't seem to understand
why I flip. They're not hip like I'm hip.
I'm hip!

I'm on top of every trend.
Look at me go. Vo-dee-o-do.
Sammy Davis knew my friend.

I'm hip, but not weird.
Like, you notice, I don't wear a beard.
Beards were in but now they're not.
They had they're day. Now they're passé.
Just ask me if you're in doubt,
'cuz I'm hip.

Now I'm deep into Zen
meditation and macrobiotics,
and as soon as I can
I intend to get into narcotics.

'Cuz I'm cool as a cuke.
I'm a cat, I'm a card, I'm a kook, kook, kook.
I get so much out of life.
Really, I do. Skoo ba dee boo.
One more time play "Mack the Knife."
Let 'er rip. I may flip, but I'm hip.

The original design, very cool. When I dream of getting an early 911, my dream 911 is a '67 911S coupe. And I can accept a small company like Porsche making the same car for a decade or so - they made the 356 for 15 years. The SC should have been it's swansong - maybe even the 2.7L or the original 930. Just my opinion, admittedly heretical.

>To me, we seem to be trending towards excess - large grills on everything from Rolls-Royces to Chryslers to Audis.

Yep... reminds me of the trends to excess in the 1970s, remember when personal luxury cars were all the rage? Cordobas and Cutlass Supremes led the sales charts. Beautiful 60s designs like the Chevelle and Charger gave way to hideously overwrought replacements in the 70s.

Check out the size of the grilles on these cars, as well as the high belt lines and gun-slit size windows. At least the new cars these days don't have vinyl tops:

I hope we'll see a correction to all this excess like we did with the much cleaner 80s and 90s designs. The Bangled 3-series is overwrought and hideous...Be proud to own one of the last "form follows function" BMWs.

I hope you are correct. In my (always humble) opinion, those angular Cadillacs are hands-down the ugliest cars I have EVER seen. Frankly, even the new Porsches look like bricks. Bricks with pointed noses, but bricks nonetheless. Sadly, this design is aerodynamic. Sht!

I removed the rocker panels from my SC, and I think it looks much nicer this way. Now, to get rid of the platypus things.......

I've recently looked at photos of the 300 SL's from the '50's and I wonder if that is the most beautiful car ever built.

Hip is driving a 30 year old car that you spent $30K and 5 years to build that is worth $12K....and not caring a whit. Hip is a state of mind.

All I know is that "hip" is not stalling at a stop sign and not being able to get the 911 started and having the Harley folks drive by and snicker...

ruf-porsche, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read the first post of this thread. I saw an slightly older (50's?) gentleman driving a beautiful white E30 M3 in Boston last week and thought, wow, that's classy! Very cool.
