I had that come on in my 92 525i. Trans went into default mode staying only in high gear. I stopped, turned car off and it came back on. I switched to manual, shifted manually to get it home. Turned it off, restarted and it came on again. I shut it off and disconnected the battery and it apparently reset. Hasn't been on again.

1) Try the reset but you may need to hold the + and - cables together of 15 seconds to clear all memory.
2) check for damaged wire on the tranny or leaking
3) change the tranny fluid and filter
4) take it to the dealer or a well equipped BMW shop that can pull tranny codes

Touch the cables together while completely disconnected from the battery. It is basically the same as holding down the reset button on your PC, it discharges volatile memory.
