99 E39 Engine swap or rebuild

My brother in law, dropped a valve in his motor, also believes it skipped timing. Therefore engine is toast.

Looking at either rebuilding the engine (and modifying once he is in there) or buying another engine to swap in. Newer or modified with more power?

What are best options?

BTW He is a certified mechanic, so it is parts only, labour is free

probably cheapest to find a running lower miles motor and freshen it up, any of the E39 engines 6 or 8 are going to be robust. He's gonna have a hard time finding a decent selection of go fast parts especially if it's a V8- I'm not aware of good cams for the TU (VANOS) V8...


He can also look at an LSX swap, those are becoming common if he wants to go fast, cheap.
