Hey all,
I'm new to this site and forum and had a question for my first post. I already posted this in the E30 forum, but am trying to reach as many people as I can. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using Performance chips in their E30. I have a 1987 325e and was looking on the internet for parts and saw an AC Schnitzer Peformance chip that is supposed to raise HP 26-28, torque 24-26lb, increase fuel economy and get rid of the top speed governor. I was wondering if the chip really worked and if it was worth it. I was also wondering if anyone could tell me anything that I should know about using performance chips for my E30. Here is the performance chip that I was looking at Thanks everyone for taking the time to read this and for your advice. Please e-mail me at bjsteinb@uiuc.edu with any insight. -BeemerGuy20 |

FWIW, that sounds rather optimistic. The Eta motors were a product of the fuel crisis, designed for low pumping loss (efficiency@ low rpm), high torque, good fuel economy, but are kinda 'underachievers'. as BMW 'sporting' motors go. To get the gains claimed, you'd likely also need to change the cam, induction, and exhaust (i.e. headers, cat back exh.), the chip alone won't get you there.
I put an Autothority (www.autothority.com) chip and FlowTech (low restriction cone-type air filter) in my `87 325is, and it made a noticeable difference , but I doubt it was more than 15-18 hp. It certainly did crisp up the throttle response and improved 'driveability', but it was pretty thirsty when you hit the upper rev range with any regularity. Around town and cruising on the interstate, the mpg was pretty normal, but the 'zing' was pretty addictive, and teh honk from the FlowTech was pretty cool . . . HTH
