Pelican Parts Superchargers for an M3?

Anyone have any good recommendations for an E36 M3 Supercharger? I know the engine already has high compression, but what can you do with forced induction? Do you have to redesign the enging and lower compression?

Just curious.

al long as you control detonation, you will be fine with high compression. you can run less timing, run higher octane, run low boost, run richer. with good tuning i would imagine you could run a hearty amount of boost. you should be able to at least make 450hp with out detonation on street gas.

20, can you fill me in on exactly what you would have to do in order to get this setup correctly for a motor with 10 to 1 CR?

thats not something i can do. i can give you advise. i would start out with maybe tapping into the knock sensors to use them to help you tune with. drop a few hundred buck on a nice wide-band o2 sensor for accurate a/f ratios. start with something in the low boost range, like 5-7 psi. keep an eye on your a/f making sure to stay around 11:1 in the higher rpms while under boost. a blown or turbocharged motor will need to run a lot richer because the cylinder pressures are a lot higher. heat causes detonation. the more fuel in the cumbustion process, the cooler the explosion is. a fast burn is also hot. high octane fuel actually burns slower, so this helps things.
try reading corky bell's book, guide to turbocharging. ..i think that was the title...i let a friend borrow my copy a while back haven't seen it since!

...In order to run anything more than 7-or-8 PSI reliably and without detonation you are going to HAVE TO lower the stock compression ratio in the M3's motor (10.5 to 1). Even with proper tuning.

...You can buy Active Autowerks 1.5mm headgasket which will bring it down about 3/4 of a point and allow you an extra 2-to-3 PSI or so pounds of boost safely (to make for a total of 9-to-11 PSI max.) But to truly achieve over 450+HP you're going to need a larger CR reduction...refer to my post in this section about Rob Green Motorsports "Shim kit"

....I forgot to state...it depends what you are looking for....most Supercharger kits will run fine with no changes needed to the M3 motor. Anywhere between 6-to-8 PSI and under 400BHP you'll be fine. You're only going to need to be concerned with altering CR when pushing over this (Which frankly is more than enough for most M3 driver/owners)

Been a long time since i was on the board! honda 4 cyl are a good example of what level of boost you can run on high compression. these motors have around 10:1 to as high as 11.5:1. you can usually run as much as 12 psi on these motors even with the high compression. but have a rich charge, and an efficient intercooler allow this. retarding the timing 4 degrees or so also helps as does of course 93mon+ron/2 octane fuel at the very least. most of the turbo and sc kits come with some room for error, so a nicely tuned kit can usually run 3-5psi more then stock reliably. i have seen 20psi on a 10:1 cr engine on the race fuel once, but thats very extreme. i think the guy with 3 m3's in the thread "fastest road m3" should saddle down and test the limits!? i think the rest of the croud would agree with me there??
lol :0)

ps. my 2.0L engine died this past week. not to fear, i had a spare engine. 3 years of 20psi finally killed the rings!

There are a few companies such as AA and Dinan that offer kits around 8 Psi. They will do great.

Like others have already posted until you get above 400 you should still have a reliable ride.

If you get over 400whp you will be wrenching on all kinds of stuff anyways, so why not the motor?

Active Autowerks makes a great kit. I have had on on my car for 15K and no problems. I should also mention that my car 115,000 miles on it. Call RPM Racing 631-423-0275
