Pleas help with engine identification

I am a new BMW owner (although the BMW is not new) and I am very able in the garage,but I can't seem to figure out the engine nomenclature. I have a 1995 318i convertible with a 1.8L motor, but all the literature I find uses E30, E34, E36 etc to name engines. Could someone tell me how to identify my engine the BMW way? Also, I bought it to get good gas mileage but it's really a total wheezer, anybody know how to get a few more horses out of this rig?
I'd appreciate any help with these items

Without the VIN, I'm not 100% sure but I think its a m44 i.
I can get the exact number from my friend at the local BMW dealership but it would require the VIN.
