De-codeing

Gentlemen:
I own a 1981 BMW 320i. What "E" model is it? Where can I get a rebuilt exchange air conditioning compressor? I also own a 1998 BMW 740iL. What "E" model is that?

Try calling BMA in Glendale, Ca. 1-888-262-3911.
If they don't have it Bavarian Auto Sport in New Hampshire lists a York compressor for the e21 320i for $199.95.
I'm assuming Pelican Parts doesn't carry these as Javier didn't mention it.

The A/C on the 320i is a troublesome beast. You need to determine first if you have either a Behr or Sophica unit.

Second, be prepared to have the engine power go down a bit. These A/C systems were never very effiecent, even when new.

Keep in mind that in order to get the A/C working again, you will need to get rid of the stock compressor and change it over to a 134a compressor. R12 is WAY expensive these days, if you can even find it. I believe there is a universal Behr unit that can be used, however I'm not sure how well the system will work with the stock condensor size. You may have to upgrade that as well in order for the 134a to properly cool the system. For sure, you will have to go and change all the seals in the system, and i mean ALL of them. You will also want to replace the drier and have the system flushed out.
