Move emissions canister
I'm new here with a new 2000 11s. 58years on two and still cranking. Here's problem-I installed the support arms for a Givi top case and find there's no room for the big emissions canister. I've fiddled around moving it forward as other parts allow with stainless zip ties with no success. Anybody? Thanks!

Most people remove it, I've only seen a few bikes with the canister on it. If you DO remove it I'd like to have it and all of the mounting. You have to cap the ports on the throttle bodies, and let the tank vent and overflow redirect to drain below the bike,

It's a great place to store water for later use by your engine, at least that's what mine did, get rid of it.

Chris Harris has a good video on why and how to get rid of the canister.

I agree. It's really a non event.
Long ago I had bought the ZTechnik relocation kit for mine ($24.95) and then, once installed, I never saw it again. BMW could certainly have engineered it's location better. Out of sight, out of mind. I don't really like that Chris Harris guy that much, he reminds me of some mechanics I've known that seem to wreck everything they touch. But, maybe he's smart. Quote:

I built my own relocation kit a couple of years ago, here's what I did
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6zqayC8DIw-ZzJJaVZ6OUloVU0 I did loose one of the collars on the road some 4 years laters. If I'd change something, I'd use red thread locker on the main M6 bolt and the two collar bolts, and replace the rubber grommets with spring washers. Last edited by Meeni; 02-17-2020 at 09:33 AM.. |

The ONLY thing the canister does is collect fuel vapors to burn later while the engine is running. The ECU moderates this burn and it get figured into the mixture control mostly by the O2 sensor but also regulated as to when the vapor get burned by way of the ECU and what I think they call the tank valve that allows vacuum to the canister to suck out the fumes. Unless the thing malfunctions and fills with raw fuel the ECU mixture control easily compensates for the vapors and there is no performance effect either way whether it's there or not. I relocated mine with the Ztechnic kit but who knows where those guys disappeared to. The only real disadvantage of not having the canister is that on warm or hot days your garage will smell like gasoline with the fumes not being collected by the canister. Usually not too bad, but I wouldn't park it near a gas operated hot water heater.

Some people complain that it can collect water condensate and cause poor performance. Never experienced this problem and I live in the humid south east.

Yep, exactly what mine did, not condensate but water that runs out when I tilted it, useless garbage. Bet I live souther & humider than you.
