Hi. My r1200s's driveshaft exploded about 20 mins after I bought it. The U joint is literally somewhere on I-80. I got the service manual for how to replace it and ordered a new driveshaft, but I would still like some more information on how to replace it. The computer service manual DVD has no info on driveshaft work. I watched thisvideo video, but that is for a GS and also the bike was already half taken apart. Has anyone here done this work before? is there a better manual or guide, preferably for free/pirateable
btw, the gearbox and angle gear are fine |

How did the u-joint make it out of the paralever housing, so as to wind up on the highway?

What @njsax said.
Sorry about your luck. This is the first time I've heard of a 12s driveshaft failure on this board. Do you have pics?

Never heard of this before.
I guess anything can happen as the bikes age.

Any pictures of the aftermath available?
Use a free hosting service to post pictures may be easier than upload. https://imgur.com Swingarm, driveshaft, final drive replacement should be easy to source still.

I just removed the shaft on my 12S for service at 70,000km.
I haven't watched that video but the bike in the video will have the same procedure for removing the 12S shaft and yes, you need to remove the swing arm. Someone was making better driveshafts for the GS bikes, maybe Ted Porter or Beemer Boneyard?? The only problem I had with removing the shaft was in my wisdom I decided to remove the bevel from the shaft and the pivot bolt had been red locktited on.........it took me about 4 hours to get that one bloody bolt undone! Good luck.

well to set an end to this thread:
I tried a slide hammer and a rebar from the other side to get the right swingers bolt out, but it wouldn't budge. Had to take it to a shop. Any future driveshaft changers: the job is super easy as long as you can get the bolts out. love driving this bike |

Did you take note of how your mechanic got it out? Don't leave us hanging. Please share if you know!

I used a slide hammer that was inserted into the centre bolt hole of the right swing arm mount. Came out pretty easily.
Cheers
