Scotts Performance steering stabilizer / dampener for HP2S
I emailed Scotts Performance about the possibility of installing an adjustable steering dampener on an HP2 Sport. They told me that their HP2 kit will mount on the HP2 Sport triple clamp despite the differences between the various HP2 motorcycles. They claim that it is possible to make an adjustment to the dampening while moving.
Attached are the installation instructions that they sent me. It appears that they sell direct from their website. http://www.scottsperformance.com/Stabilizer_Purchase2.php?Make=Bmw&Model=HP2&Bike_ID=4487&Year=2008&Size=0&Add_On=%20(all%20models)&BI_ID=23784 ![]() ![]() |

Nope. I'll have to see it on one other than mine. Don't how it would bolt up to the existing Triple Clamp.

You should go for it & write us a user's report. There is a guy who occassionally posts here , emccarty (I think) who put one on his 1100S, but he had to fab a bracket to do it. Might want ot check out his old posts.

Do not take too seriously

Why would you put such an obtrusive thing right on top of that beautiful top triple?

Hold on!
I talked with these guys after I bought my Megamoto. On Advrider there is a post of a guy who had one but had to raise his bars higher. I wanted to know if they had one that wouldn't require raising the bar. They didn't and in fact were quite PO'd about making some of these for a guy that GUARANTEED being able to sell them...then sent them back! At the time they were WAY PO'd at BMW riders. These are, no doubt, great units. I just really question the fit. Try before you buy. For those in So Cal that might be fairly easy they're located in Montrose.

I'm wondering what is it that makes you feel the need for the Scotts device (which by all accounts is a great dampener). Have you experienced any instability? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/confused.gif

just an idea... would it be easier to install an Ohlins Damper in place of the stock one?

I contacted these guys to see if they thought the HP2 dampener would fit on the R12s, they said it wouldn't work. How different are the upper triple trees between the HP2 and R12s?

http://www.indysuperbikes.com/Isb1/ohlins_steering_dampers_ohlins.html ... in place of the stock one. The problem is that the stock positioning is such that turning the adjustment knob would be difficult even with the motorcycle stopped and sitting on it's side stand. Forget about trying to do it on the go. Ohlins does sell the ones that fit on top of the triple clamp too, but as is being pointed out, fitment is an issue even with people that claim to make one that fits. |

http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/RightDiagrams.asp?mospid=50844&btnr=31_0820&grafikname=B0005044&model=HP2SPORT Here it is for the R1200S: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/RightDiagrams.asp?mospid=49426&btnr=31_0782&grafikname=B0004493&model=R1200S Looks like they are different enough that it might be a problem. Then again, the HP2 Enduro and HP2 Sport look different enough that it would seem to me that it would be a problem as well. |

Yes I have felt a few moments of instability. All of them have been due to potholes, or rather, recovery from potholes. May also be just that I need to work on the suspension some more. At first I was deciding between fooling around with the suspension some more and putting on an adjustable dampener. At first I figured the dampener couldn't hurt because I can always turn it off. The fitment issues make me a little worried. My latest thought is that I should buy one and try it just to spite the trolls. |

I certainly don't want to discorage you from getting one, as I want one myself. But after analyzing pictures of the top triple clamp, I believe the following. The Scott dampener will work on any traditional cartridge fork HP2 model, like HP2 dirt and Megamoto, but not on HP2 sport or R1200s which actually have very similar triple trees. Just my thought but I see no way this thing will mount on the HP2 dirt model and also the HP2 sport with the same bracket system.

Another thing I like about the Scotts dampener is you can easily change it from one bike to another. I'm set up on multiple bikes and use only one dampener. Takes about 47 seconds to take one off and another 53 seconds to install it on a different rig.

I'm happy with the stock one...so far.

I've never seen one of these used by Nate Kern or Brian Parriot, nor on any other HP2S raced by BMW at Daytona.
