There was no way in hell we could have gone any faster than 90KMH... no where!

After the arctic circle, the problem had tunred to the exact opposite. It had not rained in quite some time and the road turned into gravel, at times 6 to 8"deep... kind surprising, when you hit one of those at speed.

Now I am sitting in the midnight sun and tyoing... funny!

QUAINT little town and it was absolutely worth driving here, but it would be nice to had paved road again for a while... alas, I'll have to drive two days to get that again.

I am posting pictures when I am back in Dawson City... more time, less mosquitoes and faster connection (probably more reliabel as well)

No regrets so far and today the bike was finally on it's side... I did a Sergio!

Ralf, did you feel the earth move under your feet. I just saw that Anchorage had an earthquake. I'd use that as the excuse for you GS being on its side.. Deet is a wonderful splash-on isn't it? My riding Buds laughed at my hat with bug webbing until the mosquitoes arrived last summer. I never leave home without it.

i had suggested bug webbing to ralf for the trip, but i don't remember why it didn't make the cut. i've used it in hawaii with great success....had a whole campground to myself because the gnats drove everyone else out.
might not work for mosquitos up north, but as ralf mentioned, they're pretty gnarly and persistent. ralf told me you can hit them hard, they stagger away, then get right back up and come at your again.
i've also heard that deet just doesn't cut it with those peterbilt-size bugs and the only way to get away from the mosquitos outdoors is with a hot tub and a snorkel.

bug webbing is availble as jackets, netted hats, pants, gloves and socks:

...no,no,no... THIS is widely considered a Sergio. Merriam-Webster is in deep consideration of including it in their online AND printed versions as THE explanation!

I had stopped on the side of the road and wanted to take a picture. With the 17mm lens, you get pretty much anything in front of you on the picture, so I was leaning out to avoid the mirror and the windshield.

Being that we had 50+ MPH crosswinds... that turned out not to be such a great idea. When I felt the bike slide underneath me, I just lifted my leg and stepped away... took the shot that I wanted and then took this one. When I was done, we picked the bike back up!

Ya gotta be practical out there in the wild!

...here are some more Dempster Impressions... I will not add to many comments, as the pictures speak for themselves. I will post an extra description of what I personally think about the Dempster. Basically what I wrote fro my book...

It was a 4 day trip that I will never forget, however... if has forged new friendships and gotten rid of old fears... all in all, if would have only one word to describe it:

Indescribable!

How is that for irony?

Here are some pics:

GS is a dream and a half, Jon... great bike! Standing up when in muck or in marble gravel (which was half the time on the Dumpster)...

The ice-fields (albeit shrinking rapidly this time of the year) are VERY cool... the color is great... unreal blueish tint...

The whole trip is unreal...

With those mosquitos I'd be gone. 1,000 miles non stop. My friends call me the bug magnet. I couldn't cope. The gnats have been bad enough this year.

I was looking at that gear Brad pointed out at REI and am getting one of these or the like:

Very few people doing this kind of stuff that are not, Russ... once you are out in the sticks, helping each other becomes second nature and riding with others is something that happens unspoken. You'll also find out quickly whether you like each other or not...

The 4 of us were made for each other, it seems... funny group and we had loads of laughter and even through the adversity we encoutnered, picked each other up (quite literally, actually) and supported each other....

It's like you have known these people for years... after only a day or two. There are no distractions... I like it.

Made some good friends already...
