I wish more people would add. It's fun to look at the bike demographics. Not sure why it was a popular thing to do back then, with lots of r1100s owners, and now no one seems to care. More pride in ownership back then?

Hello to All,

'Thought this would be a good time to chime in since I just purchased a "Light" last Friday. For what it's worth, mine does not have the CF instrument surround but does have a CF hugger. At some point in time the CF rear seat cowl must have gotten lost because mine has a black painted piece in its place. I do have the sport suspension (yellow springs) and 5.5" rear wheel.

I suppose it would be easy enough to "make" a "Light" if one spent enough money on the CF pieces, but would it really be worth it? I bought mine because it was in excellent shape, had low miles, and all the options I wanted. Still prefer Mandarin over black.

By the way, except for the seat, this is a great bike. Not near the power my Daytona 955i has, but the handling (at least within my riding limits) is incredible and it cruises great at 90 mph.

Cheers,

RR

Also,.. as far as the R1100s light goes , it came w/out ABS and had the 5.5" rear wheel, no heated grips. and no center stand.

Hmm - mine sure had the ABS *and* 5.5 wheel... but correct on the no heat + no centerstand, probably because of the raised suspension.

Blacked engine & trans, blue thread CF bits as previously noted (including heel guards/exh heat shields, tank center, headlight surround, belly pan, seat cowl), long sport suspension as noted, and 5.5" wheel. no CF instrument surround or turn signal pods. no R1100S models came from factory with a rear hugger.
mine came with larger alternator, ABS, low bars, damper & "normal" length torque arm. I have added some things, including heated grips, and a c-stand that finds its way onto the bike when i am more than a day away from home.
200 made is the number i've always heard, but never confirmed.
the day i bought it in the Bronx in 2002, less than 4K miles

a coupla years ago:

this fall, with 77K on it:

2 of a kind!

I looked for a year for this beauty....... I'll keep it forever!

These pics were taken last month on a lunch trip to Alice's Restaurant (about an hour from my office).....

So what do I find at the end of the road?? ANOTHER Light Bike!!

Imagine that, 2 out of a production run of only 200, and they just happen to be at the same time, same place. And it just happened to be the famous Alice's Restaurant, an icon of motorcycling!

Mine is totally stock, except for a new Sargent saddle, and tinted screen.
Ohlin's is next on the list!

peace
Len

This was a trip up the ocean side of the mountains, Hwy. 9 to Skyline (Hwy 35).... we are blessed with GREAT riding here in the Santa Cruz mountains! Beautiful redwood forests, stunning coastal views (PCH!), wide open plains, and not much traffic- this is paradise!

I'd love to show you around......

p.s. I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but the light bike also has a carbon SHOCK PROTECTOR, good for at least 3mph on the top end.....

yes, it was previously mentioned... as NOT being a standard or optional item from BMW. Not on the Light, nor on any other version of the R1100S. Ilmberger and Pyramid are the most common aftermarkets.

No, no, that's not what I'm talking about...... what you are referring to is the highly coveted aftermarket rear tire hugger. What I'm talking about is the rear shock protector (remember, at LEAST 3mph!)....(yeah, it's dirty, I got some rain this afternoon)

Also, along with the afore-mentioned black engine block, mine came with the steering damper and ABS.

And like all Lite bikes, there are the heel guards, worth nothing on the top end, but really helps get the bike off the line!

peace

oh yeah, you're right on the shock protector- the one with the glued on CF segment.
damn, it's been so long since i yanked my crummy stock shocks that i completely forgot about that bad boy.
only BMW could add a bunch of extra stuff to the standard model, and then call it "Light". go figure.

sure looks to be; shock protector, yellow-springed shocks, chin spoiler, steering damper, black alternator cover, blacked engine. can't really disern the blue-thread CF bits, but all those other pieces say "yes indeedy!".
dang straight price too! quite the deal if you can get it for anywhere near that (likely) $6K pricing.

Coming in way late to this discussion. But isn't the Light really a BC-Prep suspension-wise and with extra CF parts?

Similarities include:
no centerstand
wide rear wheel
low bars

I think I'll only confirm what others have said, I bought Darryl Carmichael's 2001 Lite...great guy and loved Bob's as well, miss them...Darryl (like me) blew his engine at Summit, so I bought it and it became my R1150S Project Bike, which is now history...Had the bike completely apart, this is what I saw was different:
-black painted engine, trans might have been black too, it was hurting too, so it went too, fairing all black as well
-smaller alternator (still have it, for sale)
-no ABS
-no center stand, had the BMW lift that fits in the subframe holes (for sale)
-steering damper
-bars were under the triple tree
-GS Paralever Link
-shocks had already been replaced, so can't say
-CF heel guards, head light surround, dash cover, front fender (duh) and on top of upper triple tree (looked like adhesive under the CF)
-no CF rear cowl, turn signal housings, belly pan, lower fairings, tank center panel or valve covers (maybe he took this stuff off or swapped it)
-mirror blanking/cover plates (still have them, for sale)
-no heated gripes and has the switch to turn off the head light (Mundis has it now)
-5.5" rear wheel (180 tire)
-took most of engine apart and the pistons, cams, etc. are R1100S parts (no idea where 20 more HP would have come from other than the BBPower chip he put in it, also for sale with the Motronic)
-He also had a GP Remus on it, which was great, although I personally preferred the Remus Sebring more...
