I had fuel dripping onto the cylinder head but could not see where it was coming from. When I removed the tank the hoses looked OK except minor 'cracking' at the very ends, where the clamps are secured. I replaced both 'preformed' hoses and have not had any other issues. If you see any cracking, as a minimum, you may want to try 'new' hoses during your process of elimination.

Kulten, I had a similar looking striped tank to your patient.
Bike occasionally smelled of gas on hot days and after filling.
Removal on the filler bezel revealed the o-ring had parted

Good luck

Oh no. It looks like I have this problem as well. Anybody know of a good shop to visit near San Bernardino, California? Mine is a 2004 and Riverside BMW will only service 2005 and later.

Tied down in SoCal for a while - that, or any other wants wouldn't be an issue. Going over your machine with the proverbial fine toothed comb is SOP for the OCD afflicted as it is part of my DNA so, I would not at all be surprised in finding other potential trouble spots requiring attention. See my posts for reference.

PM me and we can exchange numbers if you wish.

Mine started leaking at the bottom fuel line were it connects the two bottom together for equaling the level, easy fix.

Ha! That's one part I didn't have to polish. I did wash off the dust of 20 years though!!
That tank is real German pride.

Great tanks for putting an extension on, had friend who worked for McLaren F1 who did a great job, put an extra gallon on.
