Advice from So Cal locals sought

In May I plan to spend 2-3 days riding in the area bounded by I15 to the west, I10 to the north, Salton Sea to the east and Mexico to the south. Any suggestions from local riders for good canyon-type roads would be greatly appreciated. Google helps, but ground truth trumps all. Thanks. - K^2

I'll be riding with at least one other guy and we're thinking about getting to the Riverside area on 2-lane excellent MC roads on the first day coming from the Bay Area. We've done this before and then spent 2-3 days riding the Santa Monica, San Gabriel and San Bernadino Mtn roads with a local from Upland. We'd now like to venture south a bit. I have heard of several of the roads you mentioned, but not all of them. Right now it's looking like it'll be a 4-5 day window in the 16-20 May timeframe, plus or minus a day on the start-end dates. We're still in the planning phase.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and for the potential offers to ride. It always is more fun riding with locals, who know the good roads and the most efficient ways to string them together. We do that a lot on our end when guys come up here from elsewhere. This ride is long enough that I'll be on the "touring" bike: the R12S. I really love that bike, because you can spend long days riding and still rail when you get to the twisty parts. It's got 57k on it and still can scream right along.

I'll be back in touch. Cheers.

Just keep in mind that I don't "race"... just some fun cruising, right?

Garage
i'm in oceanside and most everything east of me is infested with twisty roads.

if ralf and sergio decide to come out and ride, i'll probably drag myself along behind them and ride clean-up.

about the only thing you might want to consider is riding gear: it's not uncommon to start out in 70 degree weather and end up in the 100+ range by lunchtime.

Just got back from riding Ortega, Warner Springs, Mesa Grande (in the fog and rain!!) -- still, a great bunch of roads out there.

Let us know what you intend to do.

Why does Warner Spring Ca. ring a bell? Oh now I remember. Probably one of the most unhappiest vacations I spent in the Navy. One of the requirements before going to 'Nam . Especially their Moc VC cocentration camp. Damn that was way back in 67. tjs

243 south out of banning. the mountain rises six thousand feet out of the desert. no foothills. the road climbs it like a fire escape.
nice dumpy little mountain town called idyllwild at the top.

the salton sea is only interesting in a post apocalypse sort of way.

I did 300 miles yesterday... first real ride in a while, actually. It was bliss and nothing but bliss... started out rather sluggish, but once we got the cop out of the way (no award) all was well with very little traffic (palomar had a moto-cop parked on the south side - we avoided him) and temperatures from 60 to 112...

My favorite road was marvelous, as usual and ranged from 112 to 75 degrees... 2 cars along the way (one was controlled by some dude who - up until then - did not know what turnouts are for... he knows now!) and no LEO's far and wide... too hot for Jelly Doghnuts, I suppose.
