Repaint Question
I have a R1200S belly pan I am going to get repainted to match my stock white aluminum. I have always liked the R1200S that I have seen pictures of painted in Boxer Cup blue and white and I am on the fence if I should just go ahead repaint the whole bike. My question is what do you think of bikes with non factory paint. Does it detract from it's value in your opinion? I ask out of curiosity because I know I am not a fan of buying a bike with non factory paint and wonder if it is a smart thing to do.

Matter of taste, but personally I hate any DIY repaint or "TURBO" stickers, especially if it's a copy of some other bike scheme. Some artistic and tasteful is OK, but on beemarh- hardly worth it. Kawasaki's on the other hand, all, with exception of plain black need paint job not to appear tasteless on a road.

I think that 1200 looks great! Although it is a 10 year old paint scheme..... if the bike is a keeper, do it. If you plan to swap someday soon, stay stock.

Thanks guys.
Appreciate your feedback. You guys reaffirmed my feelings that although it looks nice nothing beats stock paint. I believe I will stay with my instincts and leave it white aluminum but I am still going to paint the wheels black. |

I've done the same with 3 of the 4 bikes I've got the original bodywork is in the loft,paint it by all means just don't use the original plastic.

It just depends on how well its done. If you do something the factory could have or should have done. My buyer loved it. I have a candy cane 12 that I was thinkimg of doing these colors in the candy cane scheme. The red would be the blue.

I like the Replika scheme on the R1200S a lot better than White Aluminum and I bet it at least wouldn't hurt resale value. I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap to paint the bike, though. If you did, you should powdercoat the wheels blue like the Replika.

GT-Jim, as a past owner of a 2004 BCR, I really like that paint job on the R1200S, I'd totally hit that! It should have the blue matching wheels too though, imho. I don't think it would be a problem to repaint an R1200S that way at all, as long as it wasn't some type of "special edition", but then they were all pretty special since they were only here for 2007!
AKA, sorry but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on that Kawasaki statement. As a current owner of a 2001 Kawi ZRX1200R, if it ain't green it ain't right! My ZRX1200R in all its green glory: ![]()

I stumbled onto powder coating back in the early 1980's and my experiences have been very good if the parts are prepped well. I have had numerous sets of automotive and motorcycle wheels powder coated. Paint cannot compare to the durability and long lasting quality finish.
I had my rims done in Mandarin for my bumble bee R1100S and more recently I completely redid my R1200S frame and all to match the ceramic coated headers in a titanium metallic matte finish. The only negative point I would like to add about powder coated items is that the stuff is a son of a ***** to remove. I have had parts on my car coated that I later decided to modify (i.e. weld) and each time the welder has pitched a fit when he had to remove the finish so that he could weld on clean metal. I guess what I am saying is check your color match three times and be sure that you plan to keep that color a long time.

C'mon now, blue and yellow go together a lot better than red and yellow.
![]() ![]() I think BMW might have been working with a blind designers studio when they developed the body work and paint schemes for the K1.

I had the Candy Cane...I think this looks better. It wouldn't put me off from buying used, as long as it wasn't to cover up damage.

I agree with maineroads...infact...I would document the heck out the bike...ie. date stamped pics. Before I painted it, In case you want to sell at some point. I know it would put my mind at ease if I were buying.

The more I look at that Replika replica, the more I like it. Who's bike is it? Not familiar with anyone on this forum with a bike like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by johnnydanger's photoshop from years ago when we were fantasizing about paint schemes.
