Discount Starter

Anyone try THIS? At this price, would be cheaper than repairing the old one. All the reviews are good.

There were some posts here awhile back about these new cheap starters. Claims of plastic gears were presented that would break or wear prematurely rendering them useless far earlier than better more expensive units. I personally went for the OEM Valeo starter at 3 times that cost just for peace of mind as the original had last 2 decades plus, but was so destroyed it was a toss up for rebuild vs replacement. I choose to replace as everything would be new not just the replacement parts.

OK, rather than going with a cheap Chinese knockoff, I got a brand new Valeo from EME for "only" $189. Go HERE if you're interested.

Hey Phil, I installed that exact same discount starter a month or two ago and has done its job thus far. Given the oem starter's magnets had completely dissentigrated, I wasn't real eager to buy another at three times the cost. If I get a couple years out of it, I'll be happy as replacement is easy and straight forward.

I would go this route. I have been well satisfied with the products and the service/ship time is superb.

bimmerphan: Did you have to remove the Tupperware to do the replacement?

buzzerbee: Agreed. Priority mail was cheapest: ordered on Fri, received on Mon . . . to Hawaii, no less!

On my original Valeo starter I just discovered that end of the plastic collar around the reduction gears overheated and melted away, allowing the metal grease cover to grind against the end of the motor windings. The magnets were covered in grease and had a shard or two of the cover stuck to them. No wonder it cranked kind of slowly even with 12.5+V at the battery. Trying to fabricate a metal grease cover to fit into the somewhat now shorter plastic collar.

I installed a Nippondenso starter ( around $350 ) a few years ago and haven't had any problems.
If installing on a R1100S , the starter cover has to be modified.

Scroo that. Discovered that Euro Moto Electric sells both of the damaged parts I need for about $25 total. Magnets are fine, spiral throwout gear a little bit knurled but OK, a few bits of plastic broke off the brush holders when I disassemble but brushes seem to hold. Just have to get that C clip back on gear shaft when I reassemble. Already not looking forward to that, judging from other posts.
