2006 X5, check brake lights

Hi, my X5 is getting the check brake lights warning. I have heard it's a short in the lens housing. Can anyone shed light on this issue and the best to remedy?
I have replaced the bulbs, and even confirmed this issue with a local repair shop. But i'd rather fix this myself and save $$.
Thank you,
wil

I had the same issue, local BMW agent replaced the complete light lens when he could not find heh problem, only for the other to fail some time later. I took it to a local mechanic and he found a small piece of plastic in the bulb holder which was stopping a solid contact. Maybe something to check.

Could also be a bad bulb, do all the bulbs have the same intensity?
