help to identify

i have a 97 base boxster , engine was replaced at 144,000 ks for ims, used engine installed by previous owner, supposed to be a 2.7,, engine numbered M962065UO3806 cylinder head num 9961041072R.. any help would be apreciated to identify what year and size.

I believe the 20 after the M96 means a 2.5 engine. the ‘U’should be for a ‘96 build, which is correct for a 97 car. So, you have a 2.5 not a 2.7. Without a significant electronic update, it’s very difficult to put in the 2.7 in the early car. It has the wrong DME version to run the 2.7, plus the early cars were cable throttle and the next gen had e- throttle.
