987 Electric Trunk Release

Hey friends,

I have a 2005 987 boxster, I love it dearly but the electric trunk popper isn’t working except on the rare occasion when I get lucky.

What happens: whether it’s the button on the key fob or the interior switch, it sends power to the rear trunk release, and you can hear a very weak attempt at the trunk trying to open, but seems like not enough power is flowing for it to pop fully. I installed a new trunk latch release mechanism on one of my lucky days, but it didn’t change the results. I put in a new switch panel on the interior in case it was shorting out, also put in a new fuse hoping that would help since it seems like an electrical problem? None of these solutions have worked, front trunk works like a charm.

Has anyone experienced this or have any advice on how to diagnose it? I would like to do an oil change and digging around in the bumper for the manual release cable is a total pain.

It sounds like the electronic popper is the issue to me. The electronic release mechanism.

I’ve replace the electronic trunk release/popper and still experience the same issue. It surprised me.

You said that you replaced the switch, not the trunk opener. I'm talking about the part in the trunk that actually opens the trunk. If you did replace that, make sure that you are getting 12volts to it. Check the ground for it too.

Thank you, my wording wasn’t clear so I edited it. I had mentioned it acting “that way with the original release and with the new one I installed on one of my lucky days.”

Testing for 12v is a great idea, by the way it sounds, I bet it’s not getting adequate voltage.
