Boxster Top Prblems

I recently picked up a 1998 Boxster as a fun get around driver for the summer, but it has developed a funny problem with the power top.

If I put the top down, holding the button until the motor stops on it's own everything is fine.

When I put the top up, holding the button until the motor stops on it's own I here a big clink noise like the car got hit by an incoming golf ball, and then I can't put the top down without having 2 people force the rear cover open and jacking around with the switch at the same time.

The short term remedy has been not to allow the top to completely close and it works fine as long as you dont mind the top light in the instument cluster to shine all the time the top is up.

I have asked the dealer, and to get the thing in the dealer to fix I have to schedule an appointment 2 months in advance. My regualr mechanic wont touch it...any suggestions? is this a common problem?

Perhaps your top is "out of synch?" I had a similar problem with my '99. The dealer told me this sequence to get everything back in synch: roll down both windows together, roll them back up, then down again, then work the top open then closed once. Sounds like voodoo - but it fixed the synch problem I had! The light on my dash had been staying on after closing the top, and the hard cover rattled incessantly over bumps.

Hope this helps!

BE CAREFUL, one of the red ball ends on the linkage on my 98 convertable mechanism broke (a few-dollar part) and caused close to $2000 in damage.
