I'm a girl interested in Boxsters. A friend turned me on to them, I test drove one yesterday, and now I am totally hooked! What an awsome car
I won't be buying/leasing for another 6-8 months, but want to do my research now. It appears the 2001 model had a lot of improvements, and maintenance is better than older Porsches used to be. What options do you recommend....Heated seats, stero upgrades, color combinations, etc. Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.

If you're on a budget (like me), I would go with a plain vanilla car off of the dealer's lot. The options are indeed cool, but very, very expensive. There is one package that Bob got for his Boxster that included a bunch of neat things - an upgraded audio package, the windstop for the cabriolet top.
Actually, the windstop is probably one of the most useful (although very expensive) items to add to your Boxster. I also like the rear speaker kit as well (relatively inexpensive at $199). Different wheels are cool, but don't add anything to the performance of the car. I had someone offer me a $500/month lease on one of these 2001 puppies, but I think that I'm going to wait (in the process of buying a house - 4 Car Garage!) -Wayne |

I have a 2001 S. I would reccomend the sport package as a minimum because it upgrades the stereo and adds cruise control. The power seats are nice also. All of the other stuff can be added later.

I have a 2001 2.7, and I also got the sport package, which includes the Becker CDR-220 sound system (single in-dash CD player), cruise control, wind stop, and alarm system. IMHO, this package is the minimum. The car would not be nearly as enjoyable without these items.
I also got the 17" wheels with enameled crests--they look very nice, and the ride is probably better than with the 18" wheels. I think the stock 16" wheels look a bit cheesy. Also, the 17" wheels are easy to clean, unlike some that have a myriad of little holes and crevices. You can really load a Boxster up with expensive options, some of which may have little retained value when you sell the car. |

Note that if you want the Litronic Headlamp setup, then you should order it at the factory. On both the 996 and the Boxster, the headlamp kit is different on the factory installed option, then the later add-on kit.
The factory option includes servos that adjust the level of the lamp to the speed that you are driving (faster speed = point the light out farther). This is not available in the litronic 'kit' that is sold as an aftermarket add-on. If you think that you might want the litronic lamps, it's best to order them from the factory. -Wayne |

Thanks for the info. I think I agree that the sport package is the minimum, and I would enjoy the car so much more with these options. I'll be looking at more cars, colors, options, etc. this weekend in Los Angeles.....Can't wait!

Call me a heretic, but the Tiptronic is very nice also. This comes from a guy that bought his car mainly for track use! The next Porsche I own will have the Tip.

I would highly recommend the "s" model. Sure, It costs a lot but I think it will hold its value. The 18" wheels look great and are cheaper to order now than replace later. I have the Litronic lights and don't really see any difference. The Tiptronic takes a little getting used to but will perform well if you want to sprint threw the hills. A must for city driving. If you are a purist and want to listen to the engine intake/exhaust sounds on every shift, I would save the 3 grand and get the 6-speed.

Tiptronic is great for driving in traffic - hands down. I just can't wait for someone to make a Boxster Tiptronic steering wheel with Ferrari-style paddle shifters!
Talk about a killer product! -Wayne |

PADDLE SHIFT
You can get a paddle shift for your tiptronic. It is available through 911design.uk and also it is an option with the 50th Anniversary Boxsters (which means you can get the parts).

If your buying the car new add the options then. The cost difference is a killer. I have an 02 s with the sports package, lights and litlle else and I love it. You can option them to death but I spend more time driving and listning to the motor more than any option. Let us know what you get. I'd rather have a stock S than a fully optioned 2.7 but I also would trade the S for a stripped down autocross version also. I fretted over which options at the dealer and could care less after I drove it off the lot. Get what you can afford and ENJOY the h*ll out of it, I do.
