Compartment Lid on Door

Hi

My little hinged door that lifts up on inside door panel on my 2002 Boxster S needs a little touchup. Would you recommend Black Leather Dye touchup or a Black Plastic Autmotive paint? It is not too bad so light coat of something is what is needed. Not sure what that something should be?

I would use a plastic paint. It has excellent adhesion qualities, and shouldn't rub off like a dye might. Just make sure you get a similar finish (flat, matte, gloss, I don't actually remember what mine are). Ideally you will want to clean it with a prep cleaner of some type, just to get any oils and debris off as with any painting procedure.

I had the same problem as Alphaboy1 but was able to find a pair of clean lids for the compartment from a member here on Pelican.

HOWEVER, the act of resting my arm on the pocket lid (in the door) which dulled the finish on the plastic on the pocket lid also dulled the finish on the upper portion of the door pocket.

I've posted these photos which I hope show the dulling of the finish. Not a big deal but I would like to clean this up. You can actually see where the portion of the plastic lid which is covered by the pocket lid and the portion exposed to rubbing of my elbow.

On my '04 the finish on the lid appears to be wearing/chipping off. Sanding and painting might work but I'm not anxious to try it.

As to the worn look on the top of the pocket, you might try Meguires plastic cleaner or polish. Wouldn't hurt anything and might bring it back.

I thought that maybe a new one would be reasonably priced from Porsche - my mistake. The lid is about $550. Porsche needs to get their act together with respect to replacement parts for these cars, this ridiculous stuff is going to hurt the image of these cars in the long run. This must be an oversight or something, the earlier ones are like $75, which is what I would probably expect them to cost.

I would be wary of putting any ink or dye on a part that I put my elbow / shirt on. If not done 100% properly correct, then you can have the dye possibly come off onto your clothes.

I covered mine in leather...simple project, looks 100% better. Paint will only scratch again and probably won't match.. Mine were in perfect condition, but I still wanted upgrade the covers.

Ohhh JMatta NICE job. I did the same with the center compartment lid (between the seats) That was a pretty simple job. I'm going to give your upgrade a try.

I read the idea to cover the doors with leather from another poster on a different forum; it is certainly not my unique idea. I'll see if I can find the original link or at least explain what I did.

Please do... I would guess you used some sort of Cement to adhere the leather?
