1998 Boxster Clutch Noise
I have a 1998 Boxster that I just purchased with 59,000 miles. After a couple of days, I noticed that in first gear, when I begin to release the clutch, it makes a whistling sound for a brief moment. It does not do this in any other gear. Has anyone experienced this?

Does it make the noise when you push the clutch in?

How many miles are on this clutch setup? Or perhaps you don't really know?

It does not. Only on the release and never once when the car was cold. It almost feels like the sound is being caused by friction...you can almost "feel" the sound. This is the original clutch as someone else posted after you a question about mileage. Strange though, I had it our for an hour today and did not hear the sound. I am just concerned that every sound I hear out of the ordinary is that damn IMS issue. Reading about that makes you kind of paranoid of every noise you hear.

This is the original clutch with about 59000 miles. No slipping though and it feels strong when accelerating throughout the gears. I had the car out today, which was a warmer day in the northeast, and for an hour I did not hear the sound. Strange.

might be the throwout bearing.

Yes, that's probably it. It's a sign that the clutch is beginning to need looking into, but if it's just the throw-out bearing, I would just keep driving it until the clutch starts slipping (get AAA to be safe).
