CEL Question

I was driving my 987 home to the Chicago area from Michigan yesterday when somewhere around Benton Harbor my CEL came on with the little engine icon and words to the effect "visit workstation". The owners manual said to check the tank cap, so this issue must be related to the emission control system. My gas cap appeared tight and, in any event, it had been 2 days since I last filled up with gas. I continued home with no problems. This CEL issue happens all the time with my wife's Envoy due to a weak seal on the gas cap, but the Boxsters cap is almost brand new and the seal appears to be tight. If the cap seal is not the issue, any ideas what might be causing the light to come on?

If you have an Auto Zone near by, they will check it for free with their auto scanner. Or buy an auto scanner from AutoZone or Pepboys or Advanced Auto Parts for $50-200 and check it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. Until I pony up for a scanner, just asking if anyone has had experience with this CEL fault? Engine runs fine, so I'm thinking this is just a hickup of the overly complicated electronic control system.

Local indie shop diagnosed as MAF problem. MAF sensor will be replaced under warranty.

Thanks, I would clean the throttle body, clean the MAF, replace the air cleaner and maybe dump some techron in the gas tank. I am going to guess that the DTC will come back as P1028 and P1030. When these codes came up on my Boxter I did major research on this site and with success, I performed the above task's. And I am now at 500 miles from when this happened. And the car is performing better than ever... it made a real difference in the drivability of the car. My problem was, I couldn't smog the car because the CEL kept coming on every 100 miles or so. My code reader is a cheapy that I got at Oriely Auto Parts, paid $50.00. But for what I was dealing with it helped me out quite a bit.

Keep us posted !

I failed to mention that the CEL turned off a few days after it came on and hasn't returned. My feeling is that it was just a glitch, but the indie still wanted to replace the MAF sensor as a precaution, under warranty. Fine with me. I have not noticed any degrading of driveability or performance.
