exhaust camshaft cover

just trying to ensure I've got the right camshaft cover - doing the IMS bearing retrofit, and need to pull the camshaft exhaust plugs off to be able to mark the position.

Does this look like the cam plug?

That's the chain tensioner. You really need to read my article *very carefully* before you attempt this repair. I don't intend to sound mean, but if you can't identify the cam plugs, then you are probably not prepared to do this quite yet. Here is the link to the article, read it carefully, then read through it again, and post back here if you have any additional questions. Here's the link:

exhaust camshaft cover

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the note; this comment in your article has me scouring the bottom of the engine for the exhaust camshaft covers -"The exhaust camshafts are located on the bottom of the engine." Don't the camshafts run parallel to the crankshaft? Wouldn't the camshaft ends be on either the front or rear (flywheel) end of the engine?

The exhaust camshafts are on the bottom of the engine. The intake cams are on the top of the engine. However they both run front to rear parallel to the crank. I think he's just trying to differentiate between the two camshafts with the comment you quote.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info. I think it's semantics: when you say 'bottom', I'm looking at the underside of the engine. If you said 'lower half or bottom half' of the flywheel end, that's where I'd look. I'm just following the instruction precisely, and this one has me confused, because it's not clear to me.

Thanks,

Phil

camshaft covers

attached is a picture of the left side (of the flywheel) cam covers showing 2 cam covers. Upper must be the intake, lower the exhaust.

camcover

this is on the right of the flywheel - one cam cover that I can see. Since this is upper, is it an intake?
