SO I recently tried to drive a 97 Boxster

My brother purchsed this Boxster new in 97. HE drove it for about a year and put about 8000 miles on it. The car has now been sitting for the last 15 years in storage!! We have cleaned it up and replaced all the fluids, battery, tires etc. But when I drive it the clutch seems to be slipping at first then it fully engages and all is good. IS this normal on a boxster? Or is there something wrong with the clutch?

I start off then shift into higher gears, I can see on the tach and hear the engine rev a little then it will fully engage.....seems wrong to me.

Thanks for the help!
mg

It is not right. It probably has oil or grease on the disk. If that is the case, the clutch should be replaced.

What do you think about a rust possibility? The brake rotors where rusted very bad, I had them turned. I just wonder if the flywheel is in the same shape??? Do you think it will clean itself if it is rust???
Thanks Tony!

If the flywheel was rusted, the clutch would grab better, not worse. You need a clutch...........

Since it was sitting, could be the master/slave cylinders sticky/leaking?

Did you bleed the clutch?

Garage
Could also be that you had some build up along the shaft where the throwout bearing rides that is preventing smooth operation. Though my experience is in 911s I had this issue and there was similar behavior.

Either way, sounds like you need to pull the trans and review the condition of the clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing, etc...

More weirdness....

Car drove well on Saturday, but clutch slipped a little. Then after about 1 hour of driving the clutch slipped more and more, now it barely engages at all, all slip.....any ideals?? I am starting to think there is a problem with the Slave or Master cylinders.....Anyone experience this before???
Thanks

Did you put in a new clutch? If not, you need to look inside and see what the source of the fluid is.

All I did was bleed the slave cylinder.....no new clutch. The car only has 7,000 miles on it. Hard for me to believe I need a new clutch!

Clutches fail of all kinds of reasons and at lots of different mileage levels. After sitting for 15 years, just about anything could be wrong with it, we have seen problems with low mileage clutches on "barn find" vehicles that sat for decades, so it is nothing unusual. You could simply have some corrosion built up that is keeping it from correctly engaging, but driving it around and letting it slip is not doing it any favors. If bleeding the system has not improved anything, it is time (perhaps past time) to take it apart and see what is wrong. It is not going to heal on its own..........
