stiff shifting

my 97 base boxter, manual trans. is stiff shifting, until the car warms up, 2-4 miles. we are in a colder, cooler environment, northern climate. is this a normal thing?

No. More than likely, it has the wrong gear oil in the trans; one of the most common complaints when non-Porsche gear oil (it is made to their unique specs) is used in one of these cars is stiff shifting when cold.
