I want to buy a spare key...
Hello everyone...when I bought my boxster it only had 1 key. I'd like to get a spare just in case....I'm always a little nervous with just having one. What is the best/cheapest way to get another key?

The ONLY way is at a Porsche dealer. Show up with your VIN and proof of ownership.

I know some shops can get the key and program it for you. For example, Callas Rennsport in SoCal was able to obtain a key and program it for our Boxster project car. Make sure it's ordered stipulated, which means it's cut for your car by the vin number. Might try giving some shops a call and see what they say. Good luck.

Also if you are trying to save some money you can get a "Valet/Lighted Key Head" for about $50. (Instead of the full remote with the buttons to open the door which go for about $200)
This won't include the Key Blade, but local locksmiths with the right tools make copies fot about $20. Then the key needs to be programming which requieres a scanner so that is about $125 depending on where you go.

Came up on my search. $186 versus $377 from the dealer. Video is about 4 years old though.

Cheapest way if you have one working key Remove its id chip and attach the chip inside the dash near the key hole Then get a VW/Audi key blank cut to work the lock. The car will now start because it sees the id chip in the car. This work around hack works best for those with broken remotes and doesn,t fix anything but gives you an inexpensive extra key.

This is similar to the problem that I recently faced. I bought a car being promised two keys, which turned into one being lost. The difference is, we had to buy a new OEM (unprogrammed) key.
If I were doing it on the absolute cheap, I would get this: You can use the key blank to get cut at the dealer, or send off to a place like https://keysinthepost.com/ along with the VIN. I would try to Ebay or otherwise get an old Boxster/Cayman/997 original key that has working electronics. Something like this, but only one key: Swap the module to the new cheap $16 key replacement. Then, get both keys re-coded together in your car (dealer: ~$150). This also eliminates the tiny possibility that the old original key might be out there and be able to start your car. I used the $16 Ebay key to replace the head of my Gen 1 key, after I had the old and new re-coded to my car. Now both keys look like new, Gen 2 keys. Both are lighted, and work equally well. Neither suffers from the Gen 1 key propensity to lock/unlock in your pocket. Assuming you could get a key to spare its electronics ($40 would be 1/8 of that lot above), you could get it done for $55 + $150 to code. Porsche retail prices are around $450 for a new key using their materials. Not cheap, but less than half is still good savings. |
